Pokes' Freshman Earns All-MWC Honors

Laramie, Wyo. (March 8, 2010) -- University of Wyoming true freshman guard Desmar Jackson was voted to the All-Mountain West Conference Third Team on Monday in a vote by the league’s media and head coaches.
Jackson becomes the second Cowboy freshman, recruited by head coach Heath Schroyer and his staff, to earn All-Conference honors from the MWC in the past two seasons. Current Cowboy sophomore Afam Muojeke was named the MWC’s Freshman of the Year a year ago.
“I’m very happy for Desmar (Jackson),” said Schroyer. “He has proven himself to be one of the best young players in our league this season. I’m also excited for what this means for the future of our program. To have young players like Dez and Afam (Muojeke) in our program is exciting as we look to the future of Cowboy Basketball. It was unfortunate that we didn’t have both of them on the floor this season, but I’m excited to see them playing together for years to come.”
Muojeke suffered a season-ending knee injury at BYU on Jan. 20 and missed the last 11 games of the regular season for the Pokes.
Jackson, a native of Warren, Ohio, had a tremendous conference season, and led the Cowboys in scoring, averaging 13.9 points per game during conference play. That was the seventh-best scoring average in the league. Jackson scored in double figures in 10 league games, including 10 of UW’s last 11. He scored 20 or more points six times, and reached the 30-point plateau once, with a career high 31 at Utah. Over UW’s last 11 regular-season games, Jackson averaged 18.5 points per game.
On the year, Jackson has scored 348 points and currently ranks as the 10th best freshman scorer in the 11-year history of the MWC. In all games, Jackson is averaging 11.6 points per game. That is the fourth-best scoring average among all MWC freshmen and the 14th best overall average in the league.
Jackson has also excelled on the defensive end of the floor and currently ranks No. 4 in the MWC with 1.4 steals per game.
